More than a Bicycle: Turning Barriers into Opportunities

As the Anchor House Foundation Ride for Runaways approaches, we’re reminded that every mile ridden and every dollar raised helps create opportunities for young people in our community.

Recently, one of Anchor House’s Street Outreach Program Case Managers, Anna Zablocka, was working with a young person who had been accepted into a summer program that offered valuable educational and personal growth opportunities. There was just one challenge: transportation. Without a reliable way to get there, the youth risked missing out on an experience that could positively shape their future.

When Anna identified the need, Martha Moseley, the Anchor House Foundation’s Director of Events, and the Anchor House Foundation stepped in. Through the generosity of the Anchor House Foundation Ride for Runaways’ donors and supporters, a bicycle was provided, giving the young person a safe and reliable way to travel to the program throughout the summer.

It’s a simple story, but it perfectly illustrates the partnership between Anchor House programs and the Anchor House Foundation. While our staff work directly with youth to identify needs and connect them with resources, the Foundation helps make those solutions possible through community support and fundraising efforts like the Ride for Runaways.

What may seem like a bicycle is so much more. It’s access to opportunity. It’s independence. It’s confidence. Most importantly, it’s a reminder to a young person that their community believes in them and is invested in their success.

Stories like this happen every day because of the dedication of our riders, donors, volunteers, and supporters. Together, you help transform challenges into opportunities and barriers into pathways forward.

As we prepare for the 2026 Ride for Runaways, July 11–18, thank you for helping turn miles into opportunities and generosity into lasting impact for the young people we serve.

The Anchor House Foundation Ride for Runaways is the largest annual fundraising campaign event to partially support and sustain Anchor House’s operations. The Anchor House Foundation works in support of Anchor House to organize the Ride for Runaways.
