As February comes to a conclusion, I have been reflecting on how the shortest month of the year is one that has the most significance.
February is Black History Month. To me, it is not to be celebrated just one month a year but all year-round. It’s a time to reflect on those who came before me and the legacy they built. I also think how significant it is that we lost one of our leaders, Jesse Jackson, during Black History Month. I think about his immortal words in the poem, “I am Somebody,” that no matter if someone is young, poor, or has made mistakes, they deserve to be respected, protected, and never rejected. The message that they are somebody is one our youth are reminded of each and every day at Anchor House, as many have heard the opposite throughout their lives.
February is also a month of love, when we celebrate Valentine’s Day. What I love most about Anchor House is our kids. I strive every day to make a positive impact on their lives, and I hope they know how deeply they have impacted mine. I love watching their growth and transformation and when they share with me life-changing news like, “I got my license” or “I am going to college.” Many relationships between our youth and staff continue long after their time in our program ends, reflecting the trust we work so hard to build.
For young people who often feel afraid or unsure, having safe, healthy, and positive relationships with trusted adults can be life-changing. That belief is at the heart of everything we do.
February is also my birthday month, and I just love a good birthday celebration—not just my own, but celebrating birthdays at Anchor House. I love making sure our kids are celebrated on theirs, making their special day extra special with decorations, their favorite meal, fun activities, and gifts. It’s exactly what every kid deserves.
You know what I would love? If you made a donation to Anchor House. Help us to celebrate the milestones in our youth’s lives like birthdays, graduations, and getting their licenses. Anchor House is such a huge part of my life, and I can’t think of a better gift than a donation that makes these moments unforgettable for our kids.
